Good neighbors

East Lyme's dog rules.

  • East Lyme Code of Ordinances Sec. 98.01, Removal of animal feces from town property (effective October 5, 1995)

Anyone whose dog or other domesticated animal defecates on town owned property or a public highway in East Lyme must dispose of the feces in a proper receptacle. Anyone bringing a dog onto town property or a public highway must be prepared to clean up, for example by carrying plastic bags or a pooper scooper. Guide dogs accompanying a blind person are exempt.

  • East Lyme Code of Ordinances Sec. 98.99, Penalty

A violation of Sec. 98.01 carries a fine of not more than $50 for each violation.

  • East Lyme Code of Ordinances Sec. 96.15 (H) and (I), dogs on the boardwalk and beaches

No dogs, other than certified service dogs, are allowed on the Niantic Bay Boardwalk at any time, or on any town owned beach or McCook Point Park from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

  • CGS Sec. 22-364 (state law): dogs roaming at large

Connecticut state law says no owner or keeper may let a dog roam at large on another person's land or on a public highway when it is not under the owner's control. A violation is an infraction. This statute is about control, not waste pickup. CGS 22-364a covers releasing a domestic animal that damages another person's property and is not a pet waste rule either.

Why it matters here
